Education Committee proposes to close the Itäkulma school building
Notice of the meeting of the Education Committee 11.4.2024
The Education Committee met on Thursday 11 April, 2024 to discuss the comprehensive review of basic education, which has been in preparation since autumn 2023. Statistics show that the number of pupils in basic education will fall significantly in the coming years. In addition, the city’s finances will be challenged by, among other things, declining state contributions, tax revenue cuts, general cost increases and demographic trends. The study has comprehensively examined the various options and involved various stakeholders in the preparation of the study throughout the process. On the basis of this preparation, the working group has drawn up a basic proposal for the consolidation of the school network, which has been presented to the City Council, the residents, staff and pupils.
Based on the same basic proposal, the Education Committee decided to propose to the City Government and further to the City Council that the basic education school network be condensed and the Itäkulma school building of the Laitila village school be closed on 1 August2, 2024. No binding decisions will be taken on the closure of the other school buildings, but the school network as a whole will be reviewed annually, taking into account all schools and school buildings, as part of the normal budget process.
